Bowburn Banner Group

Times of Group

AGMs are generally held in June, when officers and committee members are elected. Plans for the annual events on the weekend of the Durham Miners’ Gala (“Durham Big Meeting”) are usually finalised at that time.

Membership is open to everyone supportive of the charity’s aims and objectives. There is no membership subscription.

Committee meetings are held as and when required, usually on a Monday evening.

About Group

Bowburn Banner Group was formally constituted on 17th January 2005, with aims that included the return of ex-Bowburn Miners’ Lodge banners to the village, and their repair and conservation.

It has successfully obtained and repaired two out of three of these banners – those produced in 1920 and 1959. The whereabouts of the 1939 banner are unknown.

Thanks to Heritage Lottery funding, an entirely new banner was commissioned, to celebrate the surrounding area’s mining heritage. It joined Durham Miners’ Gala in the Centenary year of Bowburn Colliery, on 8th July 2006, when it as dedicated in the Cathedral.

A Children’s Banner was also commissioned in 2006, based on designs produced by children at Bowburn Junior School, who also helped in its production.

All four banners are on permanent display in Bowburn’s Community Centre (the former Miners’ Welfare Hall & Institute), together with the 1985 banner of Tursdale Mechanics NUM, which the group has on long-term loan. The three main banners are in cases made from the pews from the now-gone Church of Christ the King, by local retired miner John Johnson.

The Centenary Banner, the Children’s Banner and the Tursdale Mechanics Banner regularly join parades and exhibitions around the coalfield, as well as the annual “Big Meeting”.

The Group has arranged numerous musical and educational events locally, to celebrate Bowburn’s mining heritage and also to help raise funds for the annual costs of organising community activities and involvement on the Miners’ Gala weekend.
